The Whole Enchihuahua. Saturday, May 18, 2013. San Francisco.
San Francisco is as dog friendly as it gets. With an astonishing number of dog events, dog friendly restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and leash free parks it is no wonder SF is dubbed “doggie heaven.” Combine that with the reality that San Franciscans are always primed to put a costume on themselves and/or their dog, you have the perfect formula for today’s post – The Whole Enchihuahua in Dolores Park.
Mark your calendar for the SF SPCA and 7×7‘s third annual “The Whole Enchihuahua.” Highlights include a doggie costume contest, live music, food trucks, free dental checks for dogs, adoptable animals, and more.
The little but mighty Chihuahua is a breed in need of rescue – a disproportionate number of Chihuahuas are in shelters. The Whole Enchihuahua’s mission is to educate the public about Chihuahua overpopulation and provide an excuse to spend a fun day in the park amongst adorable dogs.
The doggie costume contest is your chance to prove your dog is “the spiciest on the planet.” Many dogs will enter but only one will win because it is a dog-eat-dog world. Life is harsh. But we are talking winners, bragging rights, and amazing prizes because we all know YOU have the cutest and spiciest dog on the planet.
Dogs of all sizes and breeds are invited to strut their stuff in a parade of creativity while competing for awesome prizes. Contest starts at 2 pm.

All Dogs Welcome!
I love everything about this event. I am probably not the best judge since I am totally obsessed when it comes to all things canine. Fanatic might even enter the lexicon. But even the name, The Whole Enchihuahua, makes me smile. So a dog day afternoon in Dolores Park sounds ideal. I am particularly looking forward to the costume contest.
If last year’s costume entrants are any indication look for fashion forward European style next to hipster chic, fat Elvis, skinny Elvis, tie-dyed hippie and everything in between. The competition is fierce, the competitors are creative and even the not-so-cute dogs are adorable.
In case you don’t bother reading the super fine print, the contest rules specify winners will be judged on their personality, flair, composure, swagger, originality and showmanship. Whew, that is a heavy burden for a dog.
TIP: No costume? No worries! You can make one on the spot. Crafty folks from Workshop SF in Dogpatch will be on site to help make DIY costumes. You can even try your luck and win a costume by spinning the wheel of fortune.
Note: Despite the “chihuahua” brand, this is an equal embarrassment opportunity — all dogs, even over-sized, large footed, drool-prone Doodles (aka my dog Toby) can be humiliated by their owner’s costume fetish.
So time for some serious soul-searching – is your pooch cat-walk ready? Need some ideas? Check out pictures from The Whole Enchihuahua 2012 right here!
Bonus: The SF SPCA is offering FREE spay and neuter surgeries for Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes through May 2013. San Francisco residency is NOT required. In addition, no SF SPCA adoption fees are charged for all Chihuahua mixes.
Tip: But wait, there’s more – the SF SPCA continues to offer San Francisco residents: free spay/neuter for their Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes; and spay and neuter of roaming/feral cats at no cost to the caretaker. Oh how I love thee SF SPCA…
