Antidepressants and psychotherapy did nothing to help Adam Strauss deal with his debilitating obsessive-compulsive disorder, so after reading a scientific study showing that hallucinogenic mushrooms may cure OCD, Adam set out on a psychopharmacological journey of his own. "The Mushroom Cure" earned great acclaim when it debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the laughs kept coming when it played at New York's International Fringe Festival, where it won the "Overall Excellence Award for Solo Performance." "The Mushroom Cure" was hailed by "The New York Times", who declared the show "mines a great deal of laughter from disabling pain." After an extended off-Broadway run, "The Mushroom Cure" now comes to The Marsh San Francisco MainStage Theater. [less-]

A look at how various social classes sabotage each other, "The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd" is as topical as it was when it made its Broadway debut. The allegorical story of Sir, a pompous "have," and Cocky, a "have-not," is played out during an endless game of life where the rules keep changing to ensure that nothing ever changes. The two combatants play out the struggles of the classes through a warped music hall view of our world, featuring songs like "Who Can I Turn To?" and "Feeling Good," which became a standard covered by a multitude of artists, including Nina Simone. Experience it at EXIT Theatre in San Francisco. [less-]

For a relaxing afternoon on the water, hop aboard the Privateer, a truly traditional sailboat, for a semi-private 90-minute cruise of the bay, complete with included beer and wine. This double-masted, teak-decked, bronze-fitted beauty holds no more than 28 passengers, so you'll get plenty of personal attention from the skilled and friendly crew as the Privateer glides over to Alcatraz and Angel Island, passes by charming and picturesque Sausalito, parallels the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge and sails past the famous San Francisco skyline on its way back to the pier. Stand-up comic, writer, actor and director Don Reed ("The Tonight Show", OWN, HBO) returns to The Marsh Berkeley with his long-running, award-winning solo show, "East 14th: Tales of a Reluctant Player". Reed relates the hilarious and poignant story of his boyhood in 1970s Oakland, torn between his strict, churchgoing mother's upbringing and his admiration of his father -- who happens to be a pimp. "East 14th" was an off-Broadway hit, nominated for two NAACP Theatre Awards, and an excerpt aired on NPR/WNYC's acclaimed series "Snap Judgment". "The New Yorker" called the show "hilarious" and went on to say, "The audience can't stop laughing ... Don Reed plays all the characters with both ease and inexhaustible energy." [less-]

Smuin Contemporary American Ballet is one of the city's true cultural jewels, and it continues to shine brightly during its 23rd season, with cutting-edge pieces like choreographer Trey McIntyre's world premiere "Be Here Now", honoring the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love, the social phenomenon that's helped shape San Francisco and its culture ever since. At "Dance Series 02", you'll also see Choreographer in Residence Amy Seiwert's "Broken Open". Featuring 16 dancers, the "San Francisco Chronicle" pronounced it "fresh, challenging and relevant" after its 2015 debut. Then, see the world premiere of a new work celebrating the joy of dance, set to a classical score, by up-and-coming dancer/choreographer Nicole Haskins, whose recent work "Fantasia" was also praised by the "Chronicle", who declared it "enchanting." Experience Smuin at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. [less-]

Steve Silver's "Beach Blanket Babylon" is the world's longest-running musical revue. Since 1974, this San Francisco institution has followed Snow White on a musical comedy quest around the world, where she runs into satirically portrayed pop culture and political celebrities, an impressive array of gigantic hats and one show-stopping musical number after another. Because the show is constantly updated with new costumes, hats and characters, it rewards repeat visits. Among the familiar faces you might see spoofed at this Club Fugazi production: Lady Gaga, Barack and Michelle Obama, Kate Middleton and Adele. Now running for more than 40 years, "Beach Blanket Babylon" remains one of San Francisco's wildest evenings of live entertainment. [less-]
